CHH's 2019 In Review

Happy New Year to all lovers of music and especially lovers of the hip-hop genre of music and especially especially lovers of the Christian hip-hop sub-genre of hip-hop music.
So 2019 has come and gone, and we are here on the FIRST DAY OF THE NEW DECADE!!!
2019 was a very interesting year for CHH and I'll like to look at the 2019 CHH year in review. You know what? How about we do it like one of those alternative year end awards thing huh? Who knows? Maybe one day, we'll actually hand out awards to these artists for all the work that they do and how they've allowed themselves to be used mightily by God to be a huge blessing to us.
MALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR - 1K Phew
2019 saw a lot of artists on the grind, sharing their faith in their music and stuff. But 1K Phew was over the top this year. With albums What's Understood 1 and the sequel What's Understood 2, not mentioning all the features with the Indie Tribe and singles like Better Days, 1K Phew provided us with something to think about in his songs, as well as nice beats to dance to. Phew has come a long way from the first time when CHH legend Lecrae introduced him to the CHH stage in Hammer Time. I especially enjoy the way He shares his emotions with all of us with songs like Pain, or Superstar and stuff. FYI, he's family will be increasing by 1! WE GOT TO KNOW LAST MONTH! YIPPEE! So, we look forward to what God will use 1K Phew to accomplish in 2020.
FEMALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR-Heesun Lee
Our Korean rapper was on fire in 2019. Hip-hop, especially CHH is typically a male dominated area, Heesun proved that women can rap just as good as men. With singles like Future that showed she's all about women empowerment and gender equality, she sang the anthem of women around the world, but from the Biblical perspective. I know a lot of women are all for female empowerment and stuff, but they neglect gender roles and stuff too. She put this balance that I especially enjoy.  I especially like the fact that one of the things she's especially proud of and not hesitant to state in her songs is the fact that she's a mum. She's so proud of her daughters. And we'll NEVER forget her epic freestyle with Angie Rose on Wade-O Radio. It was EPIC. I mean, she has the potential to match Shai Linne as a lyricist. We are seriously looking forward to what God will use her to do in 2020.
ALBUM OF THE YEAR-NEVERFOLD BY TEDASHII
Sure there were a lot of albums from a lot of reputable artists, but Tedashii stood above them all. Talk about passion, love and emotion? Neverfold has it all. He literally poured out his heart in that album. Songs like God Flex, where he talked about the fact that everything he'll ever have will come from God, Home, where he expressed his longing for heaven, Step Into Love, where he screamed the power of God to heal and deliver people, especially people who have been hurt before. Give this album to your non-Christian friends, and you've got yourself a potential conversation starter that'll likely lead to a conversion. You can count on that.
    SONG OF THE YEAR
OK there are a lot. I mean A LOT of choices for this one, but in my opinion, I'll give it to 2 songs. I just couldn't pick. What?
GLORY BY 1K PHEW, AARON COLE AND JAMIE GRACE
One word. Awesome!!! This was the first time for these three artists to do a collaboration, and they did not disappoint. We have battles to fight, and God wants to fight them for us. When He does, and He wins (I mean, can you envision another winner? He's God OK?) He gets the ultimate Glory. All together now, GLORY!
TESTIFY BY SOCIAL CLUB MISFITS AND CROWTHER
"I was falling apart but heaven rescued me."
I mean, that's everybody's story isn't it? We were all messed up before we met Jesus weren't we? From the first verse on how Fern went to jail, and how Jesus rescued him, to that verse by Crowther that goes; "Jesus rescued me up from the grave, I'm singing amazing grace."
you can feel the passion these guys have for evangelism and the gratitude they have to God for salvation.
    LINE OF THE year-nobigdyl
Hip-hop is characterized by awesome lines, punchlines and stuff, and we have tremendous artists in the CHH community who can give lines like die. There's Shai Linne, KB, Trip Lee and the list is ENDLESS! But nobigdyl killed it in his collaboration with Roy Tosh and Stephen Malcolm in Look At Me Now.
"Nobody motivate me like a hater could
Yeah I just work for God and yeah He pay me good."
BAM! BAM! BBBBAAAAM!
    IN CONCLUSION
2019 was mind blowing for CHH. Let's not forget KB and his awesome singles Hold Me Back and Lincoln, or Bizzle's Light Work 2 where he had the remix of Way Up with the full God Over Money gang, or Dee 1's God and Girls album, or everytime 1K Phew, Ty Bassel and WHATUPRG collaborated, or even the Nigerian Hip-hop scene (I'll talk more about this in a later post) where Spokesman, Limoblaze and the Rap Nation enjoyed the privilege of being a blessing to our souls
2020's already promising to be an amazing year with Lecrae promising to release his album Restoration in January. I already cannot wait. Happy New Year to you all. I wish you an exciting and amazing year, and like the Bible says in Proverbs 4:18, the path of Christian Hip-hop will be like a shining light, that'll shine brighter and brighter until that perfect day when Jesus will return. As much as our 2019 was amazing,  our 2020 will be much much much greater. Happy New Year once again!

Song Review: Armies By KB

So a couple of days ago, we were blessed with the release of this single by Christian Hip-hop sensation Kevin Burgess. Personally, I get excited anytime I hear KB has released a new song because he never disappoints. I believe Armies by KB is a song for today. A favourite Bible passage for a lot of people would be the 91st Psalm, which has to do with God's promises of protection concerning the people He loves. Armies is a song that reminds us of the fact that everywhere we go, we have an army of angels surrounding us.               LYRIC BY LYRIC REVIEW  Danger, giants Battle is my story But alone, I won't know That's my glory Shadows you cannot hide me, uh My King will fight The God of angel armies Is always by my side  So this is reminiscent isn't it? Remember that song by Chris Tomlin? Whom Shall I Fear? I've always been a hip-hop person, so I'll always prefer KB's version. We live in a world where we constantly wrestle against S

I Can't Breathe (And I should probably apologize to Lecrae)

Look, I know I'm not in the best position to speak about everything happening in America, and for some good reason (in my opinion). First of all, I'm Nigerian. From Africa. And though I've seen episodes of police brutality, I haven't experienced racism (well, there was this time, on Facebook...). And then, I only hear stuff on news, it's kinda different when you're there to experience it first hand. Like it's your daily experience.    Well, in 2016, Trip Lee released his album The Waiting Room (one of his best in my opinion), and there's this song there that gave me a little taste of the typical Black American experience. I'm talking about Lord Have Mercy by Trip Lee.    In the second verse, Trip said; "He made me a black man, with all black clothes  Black coffee, blacking out on all my flows But why is black a problem here for all my bros?  And why they tryna put a tag on all our toes?  Black fists on the pick sticking out my 'fro He made
